Survey, Listing, Documentation, Protection & Conservation

of  ancient monuments of local importance

Delhi possesses number of ancient monuments  spreading over millennia of history in the entire city. While the national  monuments are governed under the provisions of “The Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958” and “The Ancient Monuments and  Archaeological Sites and Remains (Amendment and Validation) Act, 2010”,  other ancient monuments of local importance which are worth protecting are  governed under the provisions of the “Delhi  Ancient and Historical Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act -  2004”. All out efforts are made to ensure that approach to conservation is  as per prevailing archaeological norms with due emphasis on up gradation of  skills and involvement of professionals and maximum use of traditional techniques  in conservation. After completing the conservation work, as per the  requirement, Illumination and development of garden/landscaping work is also  taken up to develop them as tourist spots. The Govt. of Delhi is making  concerted efforts for preservation and conservation of these  monuments in a phased manner.

The Department has launched  an ambitious project of survey, listing, documentation and protection of these  ancient monuments of local importance in the city under the provisions of  aforesaid Act. The Department has undertaken survey & documentation of 238  monuments identified from the list ‘Mohammedan  and Hindu Monuments’ in Delhi prepared by ASI out which worth protecting ancient  monuments will be declared protected monuments in a phased manner under the  provisions of aforesaid Act. As of now, the department has issued final  notification in respect of 19 monuments declaring them as Protected  Monuments. 

Accordingly  the Department has also launched a project to conserve and maintain the ancient  monuments of local importance in the city. In view of the huge extent of this  work, the Department of Archaeology entered into an MOU / Agreement with INTACH  on 29.10.08 & subsequently on 23.11.12 to undertake activities viz. survey,  documentation, conservation (structural and chemical), illumination,  horticultural development etc. In addition, Department has also entered into an  Agreement with Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC) on 11.07.13 to undertake  conservation of Sarai of Azim Ganj inside National Zoological Park, Delhi.

Department of  Archaeology has completed two sets of conservation of monuments conserving 33  monuments and conservation of 3rd set of 18 monuments is in  progress. In addition conservation work of Dara Shikoh Library Building at  Kashmere Gate and conservation of Sarai of Azim Ganj inside National Zoological  Park are in progress.
