In order to achieve its aforementioned objective, the department undertakes the functions of Survey, listing, documentation, protection, conservation, chemical preservation, illumination, maintenance, landscaping, development and beautification of ancient monuments of local importance worth protecting in Delhi under the provisions of “The Delhi Ancient and Historical Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 2004”, (DAHMSAR Act 2004) other than those of national importance protected and maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India, Government of India.; setting up of archaeological museum; archaeological explorations and excavations; educational activities involving adopting a monument by schools under “Adopt a Monument” scheme of CBSE for spreading awareness among students, heritage walks, etc. Special efforts are made to involve NGOS, RWAs, PSUs and Corporate bodies in the maintenance and upkeep of the monuments under the overall supervision of the Department of Archaeology and develop them as tourist spots, etc.
